Several holders of Turkish diplomatic passports, including Turkey’s deputy ambassador to Switzerland reportedly have asked for political asylum in Switzerland, calling the move a potential test of the neutral country’s ties with Turkey. According to Swiss media.
The exact number of asylum applicants remains unclear and the authorities of both Turkey and Switzerland have refrained from comments, the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper (in German) said on Wednesday.
After a failed coup in July 2016, Turkey arrested tens of thousands of suspected followers of US-based Islamic cleric Fethullah Gulen,a cleric who has been living in the United States since 1999, for orchestrating the failed coup.
The Swiss migration service said it could not comment on individual cases.
