Mauricio Pochettino has “laid the first foundations” to leave Tottenham in order to manage one of Europe’s elite clubs, according to Gary Neville.
Pochettino has repeatedly been linked with a move to Real Madrid, who sacked coach Julen Lopetegui on Monday night.
While Pochettino distanced himself from the job on Friday, Real president Florentino Perez is expected to test Tottenham’s resolve again – most likely as the end of the 2018-19 season.
Pochettino admitted on Friday that the current campaign – with construction problems delaying the move into their new stadium until 2019 and Spurs failing to make a signle summer signing – had given him his “worst feeling” as Tottenham boss.
And that feeling was compounded on Monday night as Spurs were beaten 1-0 at Wembley by Premier League champions Manchester City.
