Football has a wonderful way of rallying around those who have fallen on bad times and Ryan Mason’s early retirement yesterday was met with an outpouring of nice messages and now Mauricio Pochettino has opened the door for a Spurs return for the former midfielder.

In January 2017 Mason was playing for Hull City against Chelsea in the Premier League when a nasty collision with Blues’ defender Gary Cahill that left him with a fractured skull

The 26 year old midfielder had been hoping to return to the game but after 13 months had to retire yesterday. In a long statement on Instagram Mason said, “I have worked tirelessly in order to be able to return to the pitch. Unfortunately, having taken expert medical advice I now have no option but to retire due to the risks involved given the nature of my injury.

He first came onto the scene at Spurs where he went from academy product to a consistent member of Mauricio Pochettino’s first team squad at White Hart Lane before being sold in 2016 to get more game time.

Speaking last night after his side’s 2-2 draw with Juventus Pochettino kept the door open for a return to the club for Mason, saying:

“It is very sad news but he opens a door for his future with his family. Ryan has been at the training ground in recent days. We have been talking to him with [head of academy,]John McDermott.

“He will be successful in whatever he does. He will always be a special player for me. He represents for me this change in all when we arrived at Tottenham.

The door is open for me to help him; and the club because we love him and Rachel and George and all his family.”

Chelsea captain Cahill sent an extremely classy message on Twitter after hearing the sad news of Mason’s enforced early retirement:

Everyone obviously wishes him all the best with whatever he does now he’s retired from playing.
