FOR allegedly killing her busband, a 29-year-old housewife, Onyechukwu Akunne, was on Monday arraigned before an Ikeja High Court for stabbing her husband, Abuchi Akunne, 35, to death with a kitchen knife.
The accused, who was charged before Justice Josephine Efunkunbi Oyefeso (Mrs), pleaded not guilty to a one count charge of murder.
The State Prosecutor, Mrs C.K Tuiyi-Carena, told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offence on March 28, 2015, at her residence located at No. 85, Idimu Road, Ejigbo, a suburb of Lagos.
She was accused of killing her husband Abuchi Akunne by stabbing him on the chest with a kitchen knife which led to his death.
Onyechukwu was married to the deceased in 2012 and had a 4 year old girl with him.
Trouble started when the wife stated that her husband was fond of loosing huge sums of money after playing Baba Ijebu (lotto).
It was gathered that on the day of the incident, at about 11am while preparing lunch, her husband came back to the house feeling very angry and upset.
She became upset after she found out that he had gambled and lost a huge sum of money.
She became very upset because her husband had failed to quit from playing the said gamble. Her attitude thereafter infuriated the deceased who reacted by slapping and beating her with his fist.
The deceased then took up a kitchen knife which the accused was using to slice okro and attempted cutting her with it. While they both started struggling with the knife, the accused pushed the knife into his chest and he fell on the floor. The accused immediately ran outside the room to alert the neighbours for help.
The defence counsel, Q. U. Odudu(Mrs.), informed the court that there was a pending application filed before the court.
The counsel informed the court have filed an application for a plea bargain seeking a lesser offence and is still being worked upon by the prosecution.
Justice Oyefeso further adjourned the matter till 6th March, 2017 for a report on the amended charges.
