Edward Herbert a 43-year-old father of three set one of his children on fire and doused another in petrol then told a neighbour who heard the commotion that he torched his 3 year old daughter because she “was too beautiful”. Herbert poured petrol over his three-year-old in front of his partner after spending the day boozing and smoking cannabis then set the little girl on fire and tipped petrol over his seven-year-old daughter in Perth, Australia.
His younger daughter was left with burns to her face and upper body and required surgery and laser scar management.
The court heard how around midnight, Herbert told his wife ‘the werewolf is coming at 12pm’ and ‘that’s it b****, I am going to kill you’ to his daughter before getting petrol and entering her room.
He then poured petrol over the young child and set her alight before dousing the older child in petrol.
His partner tendered a statement to the court which said Herbert had been “getting angry all the time” and had “doubled his cannabis use” before the terrible incident. She said he had smoked cannabis throughout the day in question and consumed alcohol before he began to get angry that evening.
She tried to keep him calm as his anger escalated and feared for her life.
According to reports, the family’s neighbour Daniel McMillan arrived shortly after and found Mr Herbert in the kitchen drinking beer. McMillan also testified that Herbert had threatened him, but he was able to disarm him
Herbert then allegedly told Mr McMillan that they were his kids so he could do whatever he wanted and that his young daughter was too beautiful and that is why he burnt her.
He is accused of two counts of doing an act with intent to unlawfully kill, threatening to kill his partner, being armed with a knife in circumstances likely to cause fear and doing an act likely to endanger life with intent to harm.
Herbert admits burning his child but claims he was insane at the time and so not guilty.
The trial continues.
